it's all getting to be quite a bit
this piece highlights the pressure southasian culture puts on women, intellect, beauty, family matters all while battling daily struggles of misogyny, SA, colorism, and societal conformism. collage, acrylic paint, acrylic paint pen.
how culture affects identity.
ma durga v. pandemic
in hindhu mythology we have a goddess called ma durga who symbolizes mother earth. she is a protector and so this piece is about having hope throughout this pandemic, even though it is sometimes easy to lose.
worries
worries take a toll on the women in the southasian community. worries about self-worth, safety, family and more. sometimes they feel like they're consuming you whole.
baby sister
family is very integral to southasian culture. family is the backbone of the connections in our culture as well as some of our problems in conformism.
limbo
it's a strange feeling to revisit and live in a place you feel so alienated in as a second generation immigrant. it's like you're in limbo
it hit her like a bus
growing up as a woc creates an environment where you have to grow up fast.
featured features
as a result of internal racism we are often criticized for our lack of eurocentric features so i complimented these desicentric features with traditional henna/mehendhi designs.
ritual
an intimate ritual between spouses is to put shidoor (red powder to symbolize a tether to the other spouse) upon the hair part of (traditionally) the woman. it is a sign of womanhood and honor.
consequences of identity
due to colonization, bigotry is rampant in desi culture. gender expression is often socially-punishable by death. only recently was homosexuality decriminalized in india in 2017.
beautiful, beautiful
women in the southasian community are often pitted against one another due to the rampant colorism in our community. i made sure to represent all the faces of our beautiful beautiful community.
no middle ground
second-generation immigrants feel like they're in a state of limbo between their two countries, but that limbo is lonely.

my grandmother is a wonderful woman. she shows her love with food and i do the same with art.
